The Major Awards

Dunkirk
We're here. The last stop for the 2017 Schurmann Film Awards. We've handed out awards for everything from Visual Effects to Worst Ensemble and now it is time for the major awards. Everything else only barely counted. These are the big ones. These are the ones to put on your mantle for everybody to see. And now, the final step on the Schurmy journey for 2017, the Major Awards.

If you want to relive this journey, either in part or in full, here's a link to the hub containing links to all seven parts of the 2017 Schurmann Film Experience.

  2. A Ghost Story - Daniel Hart
  3. Good Time - Oneohotrix Point Never
  4. Phantom Thread - Jonny Greenwood
  5. The Shape of Water - Alexandre Desplat
Hans Zimmer created a cacophony of noise to simulate the onslaught faced by the soldiers at Dunkirk waiting for a miracle. Daniel Hart scored the pains of loss and the lingering effects of grief through time for A Ghost Story. Onehotrix Point Never's score is a drug-fueled propulsive nightmare constantly agitating and driving action. Pulse-pounding and terrifying pushing Robert Pattinson through Good Time. Jonny Greenwood's gorgeous piano-centered score fills the Woodcock house with a melancholy elegance. Alexandre Deplat's music is a soaring, swooning magical score for The Shape of Water.
Runner Up - The Shape of Water - Alexandre Desplat
Winner - GOOD TIME - ONEOHOTRIX POINT NEVER

The Beguiled

  2. Dunkirk - Hoyte van Hoytema
  3. The Lost City of Z - Darius Khondji
  4. Mudbound - Rachel Morrison
  5. The Shape of Water - Dan Laustsen
Roger Deakins had made a lot of incredible looking film in his long Hall of Fame career but Blade Runner 2049 might just be his best work. Every single frame is stunning. Roughly 90% of Dunkirk takes place with either a backdrop of sand, sky or water featuring actors all wearing the same outfit but Hoyte van Hoytema takes the drab palette and makes it stunning, really letting the accentuating shots absolutely sing. Darius Khondji shoots the jungle as Percy Fawcett sees it. Entracing, inviting and dangerous. Just by looking at the film it is easy to understand the obsession Percy developed. Similar to the work done by van Hoytema, Rachel Morrison makes the drab beautiful and powerful. Mudbound lives up to its title with the grimy and dirty farm. The Shape of Water is a Cold War era fairy tale wherein a woman falls in love with the Creature From the Black Lagoon and Dan Laustsen captures the swoony romance, the magical elements and the Cold War industrial war magnificently.
Runner Up - The Lost City of Z - Darius Khondji
Winner - BLADE RUNNER 2049 - ROGER DEAKINS

The Meyerowitz Stories
Best Original Screenplay:
Previous Winner - Hell or High Water - Taylor Sheridan
Best Oscar Nominee - Get Out - Jordan Peele
Worst Oscar Nominee - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Martin McDonagh
Predicted Oscar Winner - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Martin McDonagh
Honourable Mentions:
  1. After the Storm - Hirokazu Koreeda
  2. The Big Sick - Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon
  3. Columbus - Kogonada
  4. A Ghost Story - David Lowery
  5. Lovesong - Kim So-Yong and Bradley Rust Gray
Nominees:
  1. Get Out - Jordan Peele
  2. Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig
  3. The Meyerowitz Stories - Noah Baumbach
  4. Phantom Thread - Paul Thomas Anderson
  5. The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor
One could be dismissive of Jordan Peele's screenplay for Get Out by saying it's just a typical horror movie but with white people as the monsters but the layers he adds to it make it an incredible achievement. Lady Bird feels so real and vivid and that it is remarkable that it is only a little autobiographical. It's such a fantastic coming-of-age story built around a mother-daughter relationship. Noah Baumbach examined another fractured family in The Meyerowitz Stories but unlike his earlier films, he aims for a reconciliation now. Paul Thomas Anderson takes a break from exploring the dirt and grime of America to tell the story of a strange romance between a dressmaker and a waitress in 1950s England. The Shape of Water is an absolutely magical fairy tale romance filled to the brim with tropes of Cold War America in a beautiful balancing act of a film.
Runner Up - Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig
Winner - GET OUT - JORDAN PEELE

Mudbound
 Best Adapted Screenplay:
Previous Winner - Moonlight - Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney
Best Oscar Nominee - Call Me By Your Name - James Ivory
Worst Oscar Nominee - Molly's Game - Aaron Sorkin
Predicted Oscar Winner - Call Me By Your Name - James Ivory

  1. Blade Runner 2049 - Hampton Fancher and Michael Green
  2. The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou
  3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Rian Johnson
  4. Stronger - John Pollono
  5. T2 Trainspotting - John Hodge
Nominees:
  1. Call Me By Your Name - James Ivory
  2. The Disaster Artist - Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber
  3. Logan - Scott Frank, James Mangold and Michael Green
  4. The Lost City of Z - James Gray
  5. Mudbound - Dee Rees and Virgil Williams
Call Me By Your Name's beautiful love story wouldn't have been possible with a perfectly balanced screenplay that saves it's best and most powerful stuff for the last 20 minutes. The Disaster Artist does a fantastic job balancing the humour of Tommy Wiseau's existence without making it feel like mean-spirited gags from people with actual talent. Logan sends Hugh Jackman off as Wolverine with an adult screenplay so good even the Oscars had to nominate it. The Lost City of Z takes a languid form to the obsession the Amazon creates in Percy Fawcett. Mudbound takes events between two families on a farm in Mississippi and makes them feel as if they are happening on a national stage.
Runner Up - Mudbound - Dee Rees and Virgil Williams
Winner - CALL ME BY YOUR NAME - JAMES IVORY

Congrats! You made it. Now that you've survived the 2017 Schurmys you're good to avoid all other movie awards until the 2018 Schurmys. The Oscars don't matter anyways. I hope you enjoyed this experience. I'll take your feedback in just about any form you want to give it to me (though my smoke signals are a bit rusty so I don't recommend that).
